MESOZOIC TETRAPOD TRACKS IN ROMANIA

The Ponor SSSI in Anina, Resita Basin, South Carpathians, provided a pleasant surprise in 1999, when Hettangian tetrapod tracks were found on a sample collected in 1995. The taxon is Batrachopus cf. deweyi (HITCHCOCK) OLSEN ET PADIAN 1986. The upper photo shows a left manus (and the lower part of a Podozamites paucinervis leaf), the lower photo shows a right pes (and a part of Nilssonia undulata leaf), and both show the tail. The initial reason for collecting this sample was related to its fossil plants, the tracks were observed in 1999, and identified with the kind help of Professor Paul Olsen (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory). Sample P40/C2/22, Popa collection. Scale bar: 10mm.
