GENERAL INFORMATION
Following the 9th International Symposium on Fossil Algae
held in Zagreb, Croatia, 2007, the 10th Symposium will be held in
Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 September 2011.
Two field-trips are planed: pre-symposium field trip to East Carpathians,
and post-symposium field trip to NW Transylvanian Basin. The Symposium
will be organized by the Geological Department of the Babes-Bolyai
University, in collaboration with the Department of Geology-Paleontology,
Bucharest University.

The scientific sessions will be held at the Babes-Bolyai
University.
REGISTRATION FEES
• Attending members: 75 euros (before 1 July 2011); 100 euros
(after 1 July 2011)
• Students: 30 euros
• Accompanying persons: 30 euros
SCIENTIFIC TOPICS
Presentations on any aspect of calcareous algae and calcimicrobes are
welcome, including:
• Biomineralization and algal- or microbe-induced sedimentation
• Stromatolites
• Taxonomy and Systematics
• Evolutionary history
• Living vs. fossil
• Biogeography and palaeoclimatology
• Ecology and palaeoecology
• Biostratigraphy
• Taphonomy and diagenesis
• Sedimentology: algae and carbonate platforms
• Significance of algae in hydrocarbon and mineral resources formation
Proposals for additional themes or special sessions are welcome.
ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL
Cluj-Napoca offers a wide range of hotel accommodation. Details of accommodation
will be provided in the Second Circular. At request, we can book accomodation
for the participants to the University Hotel.
Cluj-Napoca is connected with other parts of Europe by plane, train
and international roads.
SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS
The official language of the Symposium is English. Participants are
invited to give oral and/or poster presentations. The maximum size of
a poster is 120 cm high by 85 cm wide. Presentation equipment will be
provided including PC computer, LCD projector, slide-projector, and
overhead projector.
PUBLICATION
Abstracts will be peer-reviewed before their final acceptance. The abstract
body should be kept at two A4 pages (illustrations included). Detailed
instructions for authors will be provided in the Second Circular and
posted on the web-page. Selected papers arising from oral and poster
presentations will be published subsequently in a Symposium Special
Volume.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM FIELD TRIP

Topics:
• Calcareous algae within Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous deposits
from Cheile Bicazului (Bicaz Gorges) and Lacu Rosu area, Haghimas Mountains.
Type locality of Macroporella pratrurloni Dragastan.
• Mesozoic limestones from Dâmbovicioara region (estern
part of the Getic Carbonate Platform). Spectacular Upper Jurassic hardground,
and Urgonian calcareous algae. Visit to Bran Castle (a supposed Dracula's
castle).
• Middle Miocene red algae from the western border of the Transylvanian
Basin and Upper Cretaceous algae from Gilau Mts. border.

The trip begins (afternoon, September 12) and ends (evening, September
15) in Cluj-Napoca. Important note: maximum number of participants could

• Red algae from the Eocene deposits of Ciciulat-Letca area (NW
part of the Transylvanian Basin)
