Paleobotanical information with regard to Romanian plants was published since the second half of the XIXth Century, with titles such as those of Foetterle (1850), Ettingshausen (1852), Andrae (1855), and Stur (1860). Austrian paleobotanists and geologists were very active in the South Carpathians.
